It’s inspiring, and sobering, to read some of the emails Mark McAfee of Organic Pastures Dairy Co. is receiving from customers elated to have their raw milk back again.

"It has been a wonderful day here, enjoying our pure, healthy, live milk!" write one customer. "My oldest was especially grateful, as after four days of organic pastuerized milk, he started acting autistic again and could not drink anymore. The first thing we did when we got home from picking up our order from the buyer’s club was open a beautiful carton of fresh whole milk and drink big glasses of it. I actually considered picking up a disposable camera and taking pictures of us enjoying the milk and sending them to you! (We don’t have a digital.) Then I made a wonderful smoothie with the kefir and this afternoon we had popcorn with delicious raw butter all over it."

This customer adds: "I was fighting a cold last week, almost had it licked, and then I drank some pasteurized milk (dummy me). It was organic, but immediately I had the phlemgm and the next day got laryngitis. I’m not kidding–as soon as I had some real live milk today, my voice started coming back…I don’t know that I will ever buy milk again, unless it’s raw."

Another customer says simply: "Just to let you know that yesterday we bought your milk again at Henry’s in LaMesa. Yippee!"

I’ve always been skeptical of people of these kinds of testimonials, because slick direct marketing people tend to misuse them to convince us to buy useless products, as on infomercials. But these are so sincere, and important. Because they are reactions to governmental efforts to deny us the freedom to choose what we’ll eat…in the name of protecting us. In the food arena, we’re grown up enough to protect ourselves.
